In the 1960s he switched from abstract painting to sculpture.

H. Kuhnert was one of the first artists in Germany to work with the plastic polyester.
He is represented in many collections amongst others in the Staatsgalerie and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, in the German Bundestag, Museum of Concrete Art Ingolstadt, various works in public space.
In 1985 he received the Sponsorship Award of the State of Lower Saxony, as well as in 1970 the Prize of the Kingdom of Nepal at the international exhibition in Kathmandu.
